Adopting an Ubiquiti Access Point
Step 1: Download Fing and PuTTY
- Download Fing:
- Visit the Fing official website or search for “Fing download” in your web browser.
- Download the version appropriate for your operating system (Windows, macOS, Linux).
- Download PuTTY (Windows):
- Visit the PuTTY official website.
- Download the version appropriate for your operating system (Windows).
- OSX/Linux:
- If you are using OSX/Linux you will use your terminal app.
Step 2: Install Fing and PuTTY
- Install Fing:
- For Windows: Run the installer file you downloaded and follow the on-screen instructions.
- For macOS: Open the downloaded file and drag the Fing app to your Applications folder.
- For Linux: Follow the specific installation instructions provided on the Fing download page.
- Install PuTTY (Windows_:
- For Windows: Run the installer file you downloaded and follow the on-screen instructions.
Step 3: Use Fing to Find the IP Address of the Ubiquiti Device
- Open Fing:
- Launch the Fing application on your computer.
- If prompted to Sign In, create a new account or login with Google/Facebook/Apple
- Scan Your Network:
- Click on “Scan for devices” to start scanning your local network for connected devices.
- Wait for the scan to complete. This might take a few minutes.
- Identify Your Ubiquiti Device:
- Look through the list of devices to find your Ubiquiti device.
- Match the MAC address of the device with the MAC address of your Ubiquiti device (usually found on the device label).
- Note the IP address associated with the matching MAC address.
Step 4: Use PuTTY/Terminal to Login via SSH
- Open PuTTY (Windows):
- Launch the PuTTY application on your computer.
- Open Terminal (OSX/Linux)
- Configure SSH Connection (Windows):
- In the “Host Name (or IP address)” field, enter the IP address of your Ubiquiti device that you found using Fing.
- Ensure the “Connection type” is set to SSH.
- Click on the “Open” button to start the SSH session.
- Configure SSH Connection (OSX/Linux)
- In the terminal type ssh ubnt@IPADDRESS then press enter, a password prompt will load type ubnt for the password.
- Login to the Ubiquiti Device:
- When prompted, enter the username: ubnt.
- Enter the password: ubnt.
Step 5: Run the set-inform Command
- Run the set-inform Command:
- Once logged in, you will be at the command prompt of your Ubiquiti device.
- Type the following command and press Enter:
set-inform http://unifi-alpha.mzcapi.com:8080/inform
- Verify the Command:
- The device should respond with a message confirming that the set-inform command was executed successfully.
Congratulations! You have successfully downloaded, installed, and used Fing and PuTTY to find the IP address of your Ubiquiti device and configure it with the set-inform command.
